Erectile Dysfunction and Its Treatment

Do you know that 4 out of every 10 men in their forties suffer from erectile dysfunction? Do you know that 2 out of every 10 broken marriages crumble as a result of erectile dysfunction? Erectile dysfunction (ED) or impotence is a condition where a man is not able to get or/and maintain an erection to engage in sexual intercourse and complete it. In most cases, this is due to the inability of the body system to pump enough blood to the genital area to sustain erection. Depending on each individual case, a lot of things could be responsible for this disorder.

Causes of Erectile Dysfunction

The causes of ED are known to be both psychological and physical, and, in some cases, they could serve as an indicator to some serious underlying health problem. Some of the common psychological causes includes: depression, stress, and anxiety. While physically, complications like diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, etc. are known to be responsible for the condition.

How to Treat Erectile Dysfunction

So what can a man suffering from ED do to cope with this delicate problem? While counseling is recommended as the best efficient method of correcting ED caused by psychological factors, this would not work in cases where ED is caused by physical problems.

As mentioned earlier, one major reason for ED is the inability of the cardiovascular system to pump enough blood to the penis. In most cases, the first line of treatment most physicians recommends is the use of male enhancement drugs, such as Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, Kamagra, Tadacip, Suhagra and many others. These male enhancement drugs are known among medical professionals as PDE5 inhibitors. They are able to efficiently improve (temporarily though) erectile function in men of all ages who are in a proper state of health and do not have medical conditions that prohibit them from taking such drugs.

Although all ED drugs belong to the same class, there are still some differences when it comes to their actions.

The Use of Viagra for Treating ED

Viagra (sildenafil) is a drug that is commonly used for treating erectile dysfunction in men. The drug works by increasing the amount of blood that flows to the penis area. Generally, an increase in blood flow to the penis has a tendency to help a man get and sustain a firm erection. Depending on an individual, the effect of this drug can be noticeable after 30 minutes to one hour after consumption, and it can last up to five hours. For quicker and better results, the drug can be taken on an empty stomach. The recommended initial dose is 50mg. Then, depending on the effect, the dosage can be adjusted to either 25mg or 100mg.  A patient is not allowed to take more than one dose a day, preferably an hour before sexual intercourse.

The Use of Cialis for Treating ED

Cialis (tadalafil) works in a similar way that Viagra does. You can take the pill with or without food. The only exception is that it should not be taken together with grapefruit, mainly because it interacts with the drug and can eliminate its effect. Cialis is recommended to be taken at least 30 minutes before sex. In most cases, its effect lasts up to 36 hours. The recommended initial dosage is 10mg at a time. Cialis also comes in doses of 2.5, 5, and 20 mg. Irrespective of a dose, only one pill can be taken once a day.

The Use of Levitra for Treating ED

Levitra (vardenafil) can equally be used in treating erectile dysfunction. Levitra also can be taken with or without food; however, a hearty meal can put off the time that the drug starts working. Levitra comes in three different doses – namely 5, 10 and 20 mg – which should be taken no more than once a day 40 to 60 minutes prior to sexual activity. The drug lasts for about 5 hours, which is similar to the duration that Viagra offers.

The Use of Kamagra, Tadacip, Suhagra, Vigora and Other Generics

The three medications above are the only ED drugs approved by the FDA. However, there are many so-called generic ED drugs that contain absolutely the same main active ingredients. As a result, these generic drugs are usually as effective as the branded ones, but naturally come at a much lower price.
